Disney is going all-in on The Descendants 2, the sequel musical to Disney Channel’s 2015 original live-action movie about the teenage children of classic Disney villains. ABC said today it will air an aftershow, Descendants 2: ABC After-Party, featuring the full cast of the movie, at 10:30 PM ET immediately after the movie’s premiere.
Descendants 2 airs at 8 PM ET that night simultaneously on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime, Lifetime Movies and on branded apps.
The aftershow will feature cast members Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart and China Anne McClain and director Kenny Ortega. It will feature footage of the cast riding as grand marshals in Disneyland’s parade down Main Street U.S.A., meeting fans at this week’s red carpet premiere, along with outtakes and behind-the-scenes clips.
The Descendants drew 6.55 million viewers to its premiere broadcast in summer 2015, with that number growing to 10.54 million in Live+3, making it the most-watched cable move of that year.
“I grew up dressed like a Disney princess, I knew all the songs and I would sing them all day long,” Sofia Carson says in our interview, right after belting out tunes from Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. But irony is a funny thing: the 24-year-old rose to fame for playing a villain.
After landing minor roles on the Disney Channel, Carson’s big break came in 2015 when she starred in Descendants, an original movie-musical revolving around the children of Disney’s most iconic villains: Maleficent, Jafar, Cruella de Vil and the Evil Queen, the mother of Carson’s character, Evie. A sequel is set to air on July 21.
Then within a year of releasing her debut single “Love Is the Name” in April 2016 (she is currently working on her debut album), Carson starred in the newest installment of Cinderella Story (which Disney’s Selena Gomez and Hilary Duff have starred in before her). Now she’s focusing on conquering the fashion industry, making appearances at Paris Fashion Week and attending parties hosted by the likes of Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, before her first Academy Awards red carpet moment wearing Monique Lhuillier. “It’s what I’ve always been wanting—to be a part of the fashion world,” she admits. “[Paris Fashion Week] was surreal because I grew up really admiring theses icons. All of it is what I’ve always dreamed of.”
For better or for worse, Disney has a legacy as a launchpad for female stars from Britney Spears to Hilary Duff to Miley Cyrus, to newbies like Zendaya, Bella Thorne and Rowan Blanchard. Sofia Carson is next on the list. Here, she lets BAZAAR.com in on her life as a villain, her debut album, and what’s next.
